Stedets lyd
(huskunstner-
projekt)
Collaboration with artist Louise Haugaard Jørgensen and J. F. Willumsens Museum.
In Stedets lyd (= “The sound of places”) Louise Haugaard Jørgensen and I delved into the paintings of J. F. Willumsen together with 5 classes of students from Frederikssund Gymnasium.
Our goal as artists and teachers was to familiarize the students with processes of making art and with ways of relating to already existing works. To encourage this, we challenged the students to make audio collages and to have these take place – so to speak – “inside” Willumsen’s paintings. This required a certain leap of the imagination: Students were encouraged to project themselves into the scenes shown in the paintings, and to make these scenes relatable through their own interpretations in order to represent them through sound.
As a challenge to ourselves, Louise and I each made a similar audio collage that responded to other of Willumsen’s paintings. This was done in order to enhance our discussions with the students on working processes in art.
At the end of the project, all the finished audio collages were exhibited on the J. F. Willumsen’s Museum next to the appropriate paintings.
What is a “huskunstnerprojekt” (= “resident artist project”)?
It’s an art project that’s partially funded by Statens Kunstfond/The Danish Arts Foundation through an initiative called “huskunstnerordningen” (=”the resident artist arrangement”). The point of this initiative is (loosely translated from the official website): To give children and teenagers in the age of 0-19 an understanding and experience in artistic processes through a meeting with a professional, active artist.
